Your Child's First Dental Exam & Checkup
We recommend that your child is seen twice a year for dental checkups. Baby teeth not only allow your child to eat and speak, they are also critical place holders for your child’s permanent teeth. So, while they are only a part of your child's smile during their childhood years, they will certainly impact your child’s oral health for their entire lives.
We will use this time to help them feel comfortable in a dental setting. As well as monitoring their growth and development, we will provide dental hygiene and homecare instruction.
Dental Sealants and Fluoride Treatments
Speaking of proper brushing and flossing - that's a tough order for young children. They may not have the dexterity to reach all of the teeth in their mouth, and in particular, their molars, which are deeply grooved, may be hard to keep clean. For these reasons, Drs. Frank and Nellie Marchese may recommend fluoride treatments. Applied topically during a checkup, fluoride helps to strengthen tooth enamel, and with stronger enamel, your child is better able to avoid tooth decay and cavities.
Similarly, dental sealants help by creating a barrier between teeth and the bacteria that cause decay. Sealants start out as a clear, liquid plastic that we brush onto your child’s molars. Then, hardened with a special curing light, dental sealants can last for many years.
