Many students are thrilled to leave for college because it will be their first time living on their own. While not having your parents around to tell you when to do your homework certainly has its benefits, you’ll need to take charge of your own schedule so you can maintain excellent habits that keep you healthy. Here’s a quick look at how to prepare for excellent oral hygiene while you’re at college.

Understand What a Proper Oral Hygiene Regimen Is

In addition to seeing your dentist every six months for routine checkups and cleanings, the American Dental Association recommends that everyone stick to a daily oral hygiene regimen that includes:

  • Brushing at least twice a day, once in the morning and once before bed. However, brushing between meals is ideal. Remember to wait at least thirty minutes after eating or drinking anything but water so your enamel has time to recover.
  • Flossing at least once a day, but it’s best to clean between your teeth after meals and snacks if possible. Be careful when flossing so you don’t press too hard into your gum tissue, which can cause considerable damage over time.
  • Rinsing with antibacterial mouthwash to kill large numbers of harmful oral bacteria, reinforce your enamel, and make your breath minty and fresh.

Pack an Oral Hygiene Kit for Your Dorm

You’ll need to practice excellent oral hygiene while in college so your smile stays shiny and your breath stays fresh for all the socializing you’re probably going to do. To make sure you’re equipped to keep your teeth and gums happy and healthy, pack a kit that includes items like:

  • Several soft-bristled toothbrushes: It’s important to switch to a new toothbrush every few months.
  • A supply of dental floss: It’s a great idea to pack extra dental floss in your purse, backpack, or car so you can clean your teeth on the go.
  • Antibacterial mouthwash: Look for the American Dental Association’s seal of approval on the label.
  • Toothpaste: Use a fluoridated brand.
  • Any orthodontic supplies such as Invisalign trays.
  • Any oral appliances you wear such as retainers as well as the materials you use to clean and maintain them.

Don’t let your oral health fall by the wayside when you’re busy studying. Preparing for excellent oral hygiene during the coming semester can set you up to enjoy a gorgeous smile that you’ll be proud to show off.
