When Should My Child Go to the Dentist?
You should schedule your child’s first visit around their first birthday (or sooner if a tooth breaks through the gumline before then). Not only will this ensure Dr. Nellie can get to know you and your little one, but it also allows her to take a look at their teeth and gums to make sure everything looks good. With a gentle hand and a reassuring demeanor, she will put your child at ease from the moment they hop into the dentist’s chair!
Kids’ Dental Checkups & Cleanings
We recommend that your child comes to our office twice a year for dental checkups. This is important because baby teeth not only allow your child to eat and speak, but they are also critical placeholders for the permanent ones to come. So, while they are only a part of your child's smile for a relatively short time, they will certainly impact their oral health, their confidence, and their bite.
Of course, we also use these routine visits to provide a gentle, thorough cleaning as well as helpful instructions on how to prevent cavities at home. If you ever have any questions between visits – from which toothpaste they should use to when to start flossing – you’re more than welcome to give us a call!
Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are a great defense against cavities. If you’ve heard of them before, but you aren’t quite sure what they are, they are essentially a barrier between teeth and the bacteria that cause decay. They start out as a clear, liquid plastic that we brush onto your child’s molars. Once hardened with a special curing light, they can last for many years!
Fluoride Treatment
Usually, brushing and flossing properly are tough for young children since they lack the dexterity needed to reach all of the teeth in their mouth. For this reason, Drs. Frank and Nellie Marchese often recommend fluoride treatments for growing smiles. Applied topically during a checkup, fluoride helps to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent decay.
