Tooth Pain Translator: Here’s What Your Mouth Is Trying to Tell You

Did you know that your teeth can talk? While they may not have mouths themselves, they do communicate with you through different signals. Some of these signals come from pressure or temperature; others are trying to tell you there’s something wrong. Keep reading to see some common types of tooth pain and learn what they might mean before you schedule an emergency dentistry appointment.

Sensitivity to Hot and Cold

A sharp “zing” from ice cream or hot coffee usually points to worn enamel, a cracked tooth, or a filling that’s loosened or fallen out. All of these issues expose the sensitive dentin layer beneath your enamel to temperature changes. This might have been caused by a sharp bite on something hard, grinding your teeth, or even aggressive whitening.

Constant Aching in One Tooth

Pain where you can point to a single tooth often signals that decay or infection has reached the nerve inside. This type of injury is typically handled with a root canal, where your dentist gently opens your tooth, cleans out the infection, and seals it back up. Left untreated, this can eventually lead to an infected or even lost tooth.

Severe Gum Pain

Sore, swollen, or inflamed gums are often early signs of gingivitis or gum disease. However, swelling around one spot could just be trapped food, like a popcorn kernel, irritating the area. Try rinsing vigorously with water, brushing, and flossing carefully. Never use a toothpick, needle, or other sharp instrument to pick at your teeth or gums.

Acute Jaw Pain

Pain along your jawline can point to a TMJ (temporomandibular joint) injury or teeth grinding. If you wake up with a sore jaw and a dull headache, grinding is a likely cause, and a nightguard can help. Jaw pain paired with fever could also be a sign of an ear or sinus infection, since these areas sit so close together.

Dull, Persistent Pressure

A nagging, dull pressure often points to impacted wisdom teeth trying to emerge without enough room. This sensation can radiate beyond just the back of your mouth. The only way to stop this ache permanently is to have the wisdom teeth removed.

Sharp, Throbbing Pain

This type of pain, especially when it persists whether you’re eating or resting, usually points to an active infection. It tends to be the most disruptive and distracting kind of pain. Unsurprisingly, it’s also the one that sends most people straight to the dentist.

Tooth pain is your body’s way of waving a red flag, and these types of dental issues rarely resolve on their own. If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms above, don’t wait for it to worsen—call your dentist. A short consultation and emergency dentistry can save your smile and restore your quality of life.
