Lisle Children's Dentist Helps Kids Smile
At Arbor Dental Care, we don't just love making kids smile - we love making kids smiles healthier! With your help, we can do just that. We work hand-in-hand with parents to make sure children receive the complete oral health care they need, whether they are toddlers or teens. And while children’s dentistry is similar to dentistry for adults, there are differences that make finding a qualified children’s dentist worthwhile.
Dr. Jeanelle Marchese is that family dentist at Arbor Dental Care. She absolutely loves working with children both in the office and as a volunteer with Little Brothers outside of the office. Dr. Nellie, as she is called by many of her patients, has a gentle hand and reassuring demeanor that will put your child at ease from the moment they hop into the dentist’s chair.
Your Child's First Dental Exam & Checkup
Both Dr. Nellie and her father, Dr. Frank Marchese, recommend that you begin bringing your children to our office for visits as soon as you see that first tooth, or at least before their first birthday. This may seem like a very young age to begin seeing the dentist, but it’s really not when you consider the importance of your child’s primary teeth. More commonly called baby teeth, these not only allow your child to eat and speak, they also are critical place holders for your child’s permanent teeth. So, while they are only part of your child’s smile for a few brief years, they may certainly influence your child’s oral and dental health for their entire lives.
For this reason, we want to see your child twice each year for dental checkups. Initially, this appointment may only include a quick look and counting of your child’s teeth. We also use this time to help them adjust and feel comfortable in a dentist’s office. Eventually, of course, their checkups will be similar to yours; we’ll clean and polish their teeth, examine their gums, take routine digital x-rays and show them how to properly brush and floss their teeth.
Dental Sealants and Fluoride Treatments
Speaking of proper brushing and flossing - that's a tough order for young children. They may not have the dexterity to reach all of the teeth in their mouth, and in particular their molars, which are deeply grooved, may be especially hard to keep clean. For these reasons, Drs. Marchese may recommend dental sealants and fluoride treatments. Applied topically during a checkup, fluoride helps to strengthen tooth enamel, and with stronger enamel, your child is better able to avoid tooth decay and cavities.
Similarly, dental sealants help by creating a barrier between teeth and the bacteria that cause decay. Sealants start out as a clear, liquid plastic that we brush onto your child’s molars. Then, hardened with a special curing light, dental sealants can last for many years.
